Tom Miller: Bibo and Finabla
BY CHRISTOPHER R. WEINGARTEN

INDEPENDENT FLORIDA ALLIGATOR - 2001 (2000 Release)

Piece of performance art set to music or music masquerading as performance art? Either way, local button-pusher Tom Miller's assessment of aural culture is certainly subverted through a fractal lens. In Bibo and Finabla, a profane Stephen Hawking solicits sex over Kraftwerk-ian minimalism and Tony Levin bass tappery;

Robert Johnson's "Me and the Devil Blues" is monotonically transformed into clinical trance; raver girls lethargically bleat in 12-bar blues structure over Casio bleeps; and the sole piece of aesthetic beauty - an Eno-esque ambient bass solo - is interrupted by the play-by-play of a chess game. Recorded sub-dirt-cheap with not one discernible piece of quality electronic equipment, one can assume either it's a punk attempt to transform today's over-saturated electronica nation into basement-dwelling knob-tappers playing with toys, or an absurdist attempt to irritate everyone with performance art stunts like setting Bible-on-tape recordings to polka records and pornographic moaning as the Dadaist-rock piece "Bible Fucking."

Sure rock can be art, but can art rock? With the engaging and surreal Tom Miller, it can at least confuse, annoy and provoke with the intensity of a hardcore punk band and the minimal sound of a pocket calculator.
